
Ken ‘Big Daddy’ Stanley, 2026
He started as a 6-5 basketball standout at San Fernando HS, then a three-year letter winner at USC. He went to work for Denny Crum at Pierce College in 1968, succeeding him as basketball coach for six years when Crum went to coach with John Wooden, and then started the men’s volleyball program in 1976. His Pierce JC career ran 33 years until 2004 as a coach and physical education instructor. He won numerous conference titles and three California State Titles (1986, 1988, 1992). He coached three USA Olympians Bob Samuelson, Riley Salmon, and Kevin Barnett. He also helped mentor great college coaches in Marv Dunphy, Dave Rubio, John Price, John Mayer, and Tom Black, plus produced many four-year college standouts. The South Gym Court at Pierce College is named after him. He assisted Jim McLaughlin for the 1991 USA Pan- American Games team and was also USA Head Coach at the Olympic Festival as well as head coach at the National Elite Camp. He was inducted into the California Community College Men’s Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Pierce College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010. He is also credited with keeping junior college volleyball alive in the 2000s. He passed away in June, 2025.
