Marc ‘Cubby’ Jacobs, 2025

Marc ‘Cubby Jacobs was part of UC Santa Barbara’s 1974 USVBA National Championship and NCAA runner-up teams and was inducted into the UCSB Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016. He set the standard for college volleyball announcing for both UCSB and UCLA, before passing away on March 1, 2024 from heart attack complications at the age of 73 with over 50 years in the sport. After growing up in Culver City, Jacobs became a leader and was known as the ‘soul’ of Gaucho volleyball. His biggest playing moments were in the 1974 NCAA sold-out championship match at home and winning the USVBA national championship. After graduating, Cubby took over as the UCSB volleyball voice of the Thunderdome and Rob Gym, announcing the highlights, coining catchphrases, and guiding generations of Gauchos to athletic success.

Then SCIVBHOFer Al Scates convinced him to drive down two hours to also do UCLA home matches where he became a microphone legend. He was the public address announcer for numerous NCAA finals and also announced for the Bruin women. He developed numerous “Cubby-isms” that made him the most known in the sport — “Roof!” “Nobody Home!” and “The Crowd Goes Crazy!” being forever favorites. He announced at UCSB for over 40 years for men’s and women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer with a variety of other sports sprinkled in. Whenever there was a community activity that needed an announcer, Jacobs would be the volunteer spokesperson, especially in Santa Barbara County. He leaves his former wife Amy, two children and grandchildren.
