Michael Sondheimer, 2026

It was Michael’s idea to start the SCIVBHOF in 2016 to recognize the great local indoor volleyball coaches and players. He has been involved with volleyball for over 50 years in writing, publicizing, promoting, statistics and announcing for the sport. The UCLA graduate got his start in the early 1970s from lessons learned from SCIVBHOFer Al Scates. Michael marketed and promoted the NCAA men’s and women’s championships at UCLA in 1975, 1977, 1979, 1981 (women), 1984 (men and women), 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991 (women), 1993, 1996, 1999, 2005. Michael was the first person to even win both USAV media awards–Viggo O.

Nelson (1983), E. Douglas Boyden (2001), to go with the AVCA ‘Grant Burger’ media honor (2000). He did volleyball television statistics from 1974-2024, including 42 NCAA men’s finals and 26 women’s, plus virtually every SoCal TV event from 1985-2013. He was hired to do NBC TV statistics and research for three Olympic Games—1996 Atlanta (indoor and beach), 2000 Sydney (indoors) and 2012 London (indoors). He worked his most TV events with Chris Marlowe, Paul Sunderland, and Heather Cox—all SCIVBHOFers. In 2016 he wrote the NCAA Volleyball History Book on Amazon, covering championships from 1970-2016. He couldn’t have done his SCIVBHOF charity assignments without support from his wife of 34 years, Barbara, and son Jeffrey, plus SCIVBHOF President Mike Gallups.
